Minimum Qualifications  

  • Must be enrolled at GT in a graduate program. 
  • Must maintain a minimum GT cumulative grade point average of 3.0 as of Fall 2022. 
  • May not hold any other assistantship, fellowship, or other employment—including work study either within or outside the University without approval of the department. 
  • Position appointments are typically made for the Summer academic term, though staff responsibilities begin in April prior to the summer semester opening of the residence halls and terminate after the summer semester closing of the residence halls in August.  
  • Challenge Community Manager will be required to remain on campus during the full Summer term, including academic break periods during the summer semester (i.e. July 4th) depending on assignment.

This is a temporary, summer session only live-in position. Single occupancy, furnished campus residence hall, CRC fees, meal plan, and all amenities of the residence hall are included (i.e. cable, internet, laundry, etc.)

Position Summary 

Challenge program dates are June 24 – Aug 4, but you must have some availability for training (April/May). The Challenge Community Manager (CCM) is the primary live-in staff manager of the Challenge program residence halls and is responsible for the oversight and supervision of all Challenge Counselor duties and responsibilities.  The CCM, also serves as the point of contact for all “day of” vendor relations and managing the overall participant experience in the residence hall.  Additionally, the CCM is charged with providing our diverse group of students with a community in which they can live and learn comfortably and develop to their highest potential. The CCM facilitates a safe and diverse community environment conducive to academic and personal growth while reflecting the mission and philosophy of the Challenge program, the Office of Minority Educational Development, and Georgia Tech. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

Skills include the ability to effectively oversee Challenge community hall operations; supervise and mentor student employees (Challenge Counselors); ability to screen and report any complaints submitted by Challenge Counselors and/or participants and consult Director to make referrals as appropriate based on the Challenge program rules of conduct; establish positive working relationships with individuals of varying backgrounds, and organize activities and information to meet specific established goals; demonstrated ability to perform in a problem-solving capacity including the evaluation of crisis and emergency situations; ability to facilitate educational, cultural, and social programing for Challenge participants; the ability to monitor the daily engagement of Challenge Counselors and Challenge participants. 

  • Leadership skills and an ability to work effectively with university students. 
  • Knowledge of student learning and development theories and ability to integrate into daily responsibilities. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work autonomously in a team environment. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity related issues.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who are former Challenge participants 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Responsible for facilitating a safe, comfortable, and positive Challenge program environment in which students can achieve their academic and personal goals; promoting student and community development, while creating a physical and psychological environment conducive to academic success; and overseeing logistical program functions. 

  • Promote student learning and the creation of a civil and respectful community. 
  • Assists Challenge Counselor staff with settling conflicts, problem solving, mediation and crisis management. 
  • Responsible for creating a positive community in the residence halls. 
  • Reviews Challenge Counselor Engagement Logs and conducts follow-up to ensure completion.  
  • Provides professional supervision and duty coverage for the residence program during and after normal university business hours and on weekends.  
  • Completes various reports, forms, and other documents as needed. 
  • Attends Challenge staff meetings and training sessions. 
  • Assists in the implementation of the Challenge Counselor staff training. 
  • Interprets and enforces all administrative policies and procedures. 
  • Responds to emergency situations in a manner consistent with established procedures. Conducts referral and follow-up on emergency situations as necessary and utilizes campus and community resources appropriately to address crisis situations. 
  • Assists with the coordination of several major programmatic aspects of Challenge community including but not exclusive to: Challenge Welcome & Orientation, Challenge Counselor Training, Chaperoning Challenge Excursions, Evening Study Labs, etc. 

Compensation  

  • Housing, Meal Plan and CRC fees for the summer semester 2023
  • $3,500 stipend for summer term (Mid May through early August)

  • Daily and evening hours, as well as weekend hours
